The Public Interest Registry has started accepting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from organizations that seek to obtain a web site domain ending in .NGO/.ONG. The new extensions are slated to launch in 2014, but preparation and planning to register them should start now.

Getting the right to run a new TLD is expensive. If there are not enough NGOs to make it profitable for the company to sell the domains at $10-$20 a year they could wind up being much more expensive.
Or like ORG they may later relax the rules and let anyone register them. I am not a non-profit and have several ORG domains. There are many domainers that would love to get their hands on domains like:
