I count this as "planning" because it is about planning for printer equipment long-term.
Our nonprofit was just gifted a color laser printer that has a pretty high cost of ink/toner up front and per page, but since it's a hand-me-down, it needs new toner. So I can't even test it until I get some toner for it. Does someone in the TechSoup Community know of any donation programs that do deep discounts or donations of ink/toner for nonprofits?
I recommend you buy generic laser ink/toner replacement cartridges/drums from places like eBay or Amazon. This is what I always do whenever I need new toner for my Brother laser printer. It only costs me $20 per cartridge when I buy from these places. If I go for original "Brother" brand laser toner, it costs $70 per cartridge for my printer. Always go for generic toner and avoid buying the manufacturer brand, unless you want to pay at least 4-5 times as much. There's absolutely no reason to pay more when generic toner is (in my experience) of the same high quality.
Look on Amazon or eBay for the best price on generic toner for your printer. You'll find high quality ink/toner at very affordable prices -- and you won't be disappointed with the results.
That's my best recommendation for you.
