I was looking through the user guide for my laptop, a Dell Vostro 3550 and noticed that is has a SIM card slot which I wasn't aware of. So how does this work? Can I insert the SIM card from my phone and go online when I'm away from wifi? Obviously this will use data from my cell phone account. Or can I purchase a separate prepaid data-only SIM card and leave it in there for those times when I need to go online with my laptop away from a wifi network?
Is anybody using a SIM card with a traditional laptop?

I once used a GSM module and interfaced it with Arduino UNO board and then controlled the GSM module using my laptop.
If you are trying to insert SIM card in your laptop, I recommend you use a second SIM card for your laptop. That will save your money.
The original poster got a similar answer in another web forum. They also replied that their Vostro does not have the capability of adding a SIM card after investigating further. Personally, I would rather tether my cell phone or use get a wireless hotspot.
