I got my Mobile Beacon:
but it does not work in my building! If I go to the edge of our property (uphill) it works fine. I believe an external antenna is what I need.
I see the tiny connectors on the back of the device. Anyone know the proper name for those connectors?
I wish Techsoup would offer the version of the Franklin Wireless device that has the RJ-45 (ethernet connector). I have equipmentr that only has a plug connector so I am limited. See:

Welcome to the Techsoup forums. I've never worked with the mobile beacon we offer, but taking a quick look around the internet, I'm guessing there is not an "authorized" solution. Maybe someone else will have a follow-up answer with some other ideas.

Franklin Wireless has good tech support. They said the Mobile beacon has no support for external antennas. They called the ports on the back of the Mobile Beacon device "Engineering Ports." When I took the device apart I saw what looked like antenna structure near each of the ports. As I understand "4G LTE" it operates at 850Mhz and 1.9GHz. The 850Mhz antenna should be the largest structure on the device. That was the port I experimented with.
YouTube had a video on making a cheap antenna:
Unfortunately, when a wire is inserted there is always a chance that the internal antenna becomes permanently disconnected. I am in that boat right now. I am going to see if I can locate a more reliable connector. I am still not sure of the proper name for that style of connector. :-(
If i wind up completely destroying my Mobile Beacon can I buy just a new device ($18) or do I have to buy a new service plan also ($120/yr)?
BTW, Franklin Wireless has a device that supports an external antenna but it only works with Verizon!
That's some great information! Thanks for sharing. I don't know the answer to your question about a new beacon. I will see if I can find out or you can contact the customer service team (http://www.techsoup.org/Support).
