Twenty years ago, TechSoup was a very different place.
"The space resembled a bunker filled with boxes of software piled up to the ceiling. And we had to be careful because if anyone used the toaster oven, we would lose power," says Mary Duffy, an early TechSoup employee.
Daniel Ben-Horin, TechSoup's founder, adds that, "We were worried about what seemed like a very big ask of $2,500 to buy wood for shelves. We eventually got up the courage to ask Microsoft. I'll always remember that Jane [from Microsoft] gave us the money with a note that said, 'Think bigger.'"
And think bigger we did. "Today, our network of partners connects more than 90 corporate donors and dozens of foundations with 700,000 organizations in over 100 countries. With the launch of our new platform, TechSoup.Global, we now can offer technology donations to social benefit organizations anywhere on the planet. This is a pivotal step in helping the world's estimated 10 million social benefit organizations gain visibility and connect with support critical to make a difference in their communities," says Rebecca Masisak, CEO of TechSoup.
NGOs everywhere will now be able to access the technology tools, knowledge, and services they need to accelerate change locally. They will save, on average, $17,800 — funding they can invest in their mission-critical programming. They can also rely on the benefits of secure, supported technology.
As organizations begin to register and seek donations, we will build out a range of additional programs for and with civil society. In partnership with our corporate and foundation partners, we'll engage our more than 1 million users in co-designing the product bundles, services, and online educational tools they need.
If you are reading this, you are likely one of the first million TechSoup users. Whether you are a nonprofit or a donor partner, an accidental techie or a social entrepreneur launching the next "app4good," thank you for being an important part of who we are and where we are going.
As someone who has been a part of TechSoup's growth and development over the years, we ask you to help share TechSoup with organizations around the world. Repost this or share through your social media.
Help us bring those who need donated products the most into the conversation and share the power of technology, one organization at a time. Thank you.
