You’ve heard it before: “summertime and the living’s easy.” Finally! But relaxation and warm weather aside, summer is also a time when people are training their hardest for the onslaught of fall fitness competitions – marathons, obstacle races, triathlons. All that good (and sweaty) stuff.
But few train quite as hard year-round as those who support the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) Foundation, which provides benevolent and financial support for MARSOC Marines, Sailors, and their families. One of the most popular programs, called Miles for MARSOC allows athletes to pair their “love of competition with a generous spirit,” and has so far raised over $150,000 for wounded Marines and Sailors in the last 18 months.
Knowing how its users could utilize Teespring as a fundraising tool, TechSoup presented the platform to its users and the MARSOC Foundation’s secretary, Sarah, took them up on the offer. The latest campaign they’ve launched with Teespring has already sold over 200 shirts to loyal supporters, and earned the MARSOC Foundation over $3,000 dollars. Congrats, guys! Still a couple days left to support and buy a tee, too.
But wait for the kicker: “The unique component of this cause is that we have the same people who the MARSOC Foundation here to help us by raising funds and awareness,” explains Sarah.
Take the example of Captain Derek Herrera: even after being seriously wounded in June of 2012 and paralyzed from the chest down, Derek wasn’t ready to slow down. In fact, this incredible young man continues to serve MARSOC as the only active-duty paralyzed Marine. This past April, he fundraised for and competed in the Leadman Triathlon in Arizona – traversing the run portion on his wheelchair, and using his hand crank cycle on the bike portion. Awesome? Yes. Unusual? Not for the MARSOC Foundation Miles for MARSOC team members.
Kudos to this incredible organization – we’re psyched that they’ve found Teespring and have been able to raise money for these amazing men, women, and their families. It’s not hard for you to do the same! Check out the Teespring program at TechSoup and find out if your nonprofit is eligible.
