Hello digital storytellers! Our friends Eric Mason and Melanie Duve at Wix are busy helping all kinds of do-gooders create meaningful websites because they believe your home page is the most important page in your digital story. They sat down to write a little bit more about the ways nonprofits are
using their services, and why they feel so strongly about Wix's mission.
Unlike the old adage "Don't judge a book by its cover," a
website is judged by the strength of its cover; a strong and well-delivered
home page. Surveys have shown that a
typical user spends seven seconds or less determining the worth of a home page
before deciding either click through, or click away. Your home page, your cover, is the most important
page in your digital storytelling journey and getting it right can make the
difference between success and failure.
Below, lets examine a few examples of nonprofits with great
stories to tell, led by exceptional home pages.
The International Poetry Library of San Francisco
The IPLSF is literally telling its own story. From first
glance, it is clear what the focus of this organization is: literature and
community. By using a graphic background for their site, coupled with an
animated slideshow of community engagement, IPLSF sets the tone as soon as
their audience reaches their page.
The Africa Hope Alliance
The Africa Hope Alliance (AHA) uses some of the same strategies,
but tailors their site to meet their specific mission. With an eye-catching
slideshow of breathtaking images featuring remote villages in Kenya, it is
clear whom AHA benefits and where their focus lies. The overlay of an
inspirational quote further drives home the message, with rhetoric that
perfectly mirrors the oversized slide show.
The Saratoga County Animal
The Saratoga County Animal shelter lets its residents tell
their own story on one-half of their home page, with a detailed description of
exactly what they do. This effect creates a stylish home page that serves as a
resource for anyone captivated by sweet kitties and puppies, be they potential
owners, volunteers or benefactors.
Unlike a book, for better or worse, websites are frequently
judged by their cover. Think carefully
and creatively about yours and take heart; with today's adaptable and flexible
web tools you have the opportunity to iterate, experiment and adapt your
home page and your story as your mission, initiatives, and focus changes. The web offers a whole new world of
storytelling where you have the power and the imperative to tell your story
directly and powerfully right from your homepage.

Hi! Does Wix offer a nonprofit discount through TechSoup? They seem like an awesome company and Wordpress just doesn’t work for us.
