We recently added the updated Windows Small Business Server 2011 products from Microsoft to our donation catalog. The Small Business Server products are all-in-one server solutions that provide small organizations with many of the features used by large organizations ' file and printer sharing, an email server, tools to manage Internet access, internal websites (intranets), remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools ' in an integrated product that supports up to 75 users.

The following servers and licenses are in the Windows Small Business Server 2011 family.

Compared to Small Business Server 2008 (which TechSoup also offers), the 2011 versions include updated versions of the bundled server software: Windows Server 2008 R2 instead of plain old 2008, Exchange Server 2010 instead of 2007, SharePoint Foundation 2010 instead of Windows SharePoint Services, and SQL Server 2008 R2 instead of just 2008 (included with the Premium Add-on).Taking the place of Small Business Server 2008's Remote Web Workplace feature is the enhanced Remote Web App, a SharePoint application that allows remote users to check email, share files in a central location, connect to any computer on the network and access files or applications, and view an organization's internal website.

See Microsoft's TechNet article What's New in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard for a thorough summary of the upgrades.

If an organization needs to analyze business data or run line-of-business applications on a separate server, they can request the Small Business Server Premium Add-on. The add-on includes a copy of SQL Server 2008 R2 as well as an additional copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 that can be used to host the SQL Server installation on a separate server. This is slightly different from the 2008 version, as Small Business Server 2008 Premium Edition is a standalone product (not an add-on) that includes all the features of Small Business Server 2008 Standard Edition.

Small Business Server 2008 users in need of CALs can still request Small Business Server CALs or Small Business Server Premium Add-on CALs from TechSoup and use them with the 2008 version of Small Business Server.

Discuss Small Business Server 2011 in the TechSoup Forums.
